Thursdays at the U opens fall series Sept. 4

Dr. Brenda Kibola, a psychiatrist and founder of Brada Clinic in Rice Lake, will open the fall Thursdays at the U series Sept. 4 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire – Barron County.

Kibola will present “Stubborn Depression? Think TMS” from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall in Ritzinger Hall. The presentation also will be livestreamed at ricelaketv.com.

What is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)? Kibola will introduce TMS as an innovative, noninvasive treatment for depression — especially when medication and therapy haven’t worked. She will walk the audience through how TMS works, its safety profile and growing body of scientific evidence, including approval from the Food and Drug Administration and support from the American Psychiatric Association.

Kibola also will discuss off-label uses for conditions like anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, providing insights into how TMS is helping transform care for patients who have few options left.

Kibola has over a decade of clinical experience, with a special focus on depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, psychosis and peripartum mood disorders. Her approach to care is both compassionate and comprehensive, integrating evidence-based psychiatry with a whole-person perspective that considers the biological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of mental wellness.

She earned her medical degree from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and completed her psychiatry residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

The Thursdays at the U weekly series is free and open to the public thanks to support from the UW-Eau Claire – Barron County Foundation. Neither seating reservations nor parking permits are needed for in-person attendees.

Although in-person attendance is encouraged, most talks in the series are livestreamed. They also are archived and can be watched later on the Thursdays at the U webpage.

The next lecture in the series will be Sept. 11, with Dr. Zach Feiner presenting “Lake Responses to Wisconsin’s Changing Winters.”
