Miller, associate director for library collections and scholar services in UW-Eau Claire’s McIntyre Library, will present “Artificial Intelligence in Everyday Life” from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall in Ritzinger Hall. The presentation also will be livestreamed at ricelaketv.com.

Artificial intelligence has entered contemporary life with a vengeance. Since OpenAI released ChatGPT to the public in late 2022, media and scholars have grappled with generative AI and its implications for nearly every aspect of daily life. Consumers have been presented with many new free and costly AI tools. Workplaces have experimented with AI for a variety of tasks.

Keeping up with this change is difficult. During her talk, Miller will explore what AI is and what it is not. She will discuss a variety of cases where we might consider using AI, from practical and ethical standpoints. The audience will gain knowledge about everyday uses of AI, but more critically, they will be able to consider why they might embrace or resist it.

Miller has been a member of the McIntyre Library faculty since 2010. She holds a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Since 2022, Miller has been a curious user of generative AI tools developed by companies like OpenAI, Google, Adobe and Meta.

The Thursdays at the U weekly series is free and open to the public thanks to support from the UW-Eau Claire – Barron County Foundation. Neither seating reservations nor parking permits are needed for in-person attendees.

Although in-person attendance is encouraged, most talks in the series are livestreamed. They also are archived and can be watched later on the Thursdays at the U webpage.

The next lecture in the series will be March 13, with Sarah Turner, Alisa Lammers and Jenny Jorgenson presenting “Community Connections to Prosperity Coalition.”
