Steve Sholtz, founder and owner of Fun Guy Farm LLC in Eau Claire, is the featured speaker for the Oct. 1 Thursdays at the U program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire – Barron County.
His presentation, “Mushroom Health Benefits,” will run from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall in Ritzinger Hall. The presentation also will be livestreamed at ricelaketv.com.
Steve Sholtz
Sholtz will introduce a wide variety of mushrooms and their health benefits, including cancer-fighting properties and support for cognition, heart health and the nervous and immune systems. He also will share different ways to incorporate mushrooms into your regular diet.
After a career in industrial automation spanning four decades and a lifetime in the outdoors hunting, fishing, foraging and gardening, Sholtz’s mushroom-growing hobby grew organically into a full-time occupation.
When Sholtz started selling his excess mushrooms at the local farmers markets, he realized that there was a huge demand for fresh, locally produced mushrooms and mushroom products. His curiosity led him into an independent study of the health benefits of various mushroom species and the specific compounds they produce.
Today, Sholtz’s company produces up to 500 pounds of fresh mushrooms per week. Many of these mushrooms are processed into health supplements, including coffee, tea and tinctures. His products are sold nationwide through the Fun Guy Farm website.
The Thursdays at the U weekly series is free and open to the public thanks to support from the UW-Eau Claire – Barron County Foundation. Neither seating reservations nor parking permits are needed for in-person attendees.
While in-person attendance is encouraged, most presentations in the series are livestreamed and archived on the Thursdays at the U webpage.
The next program in the series will be Oct. 8, with Dr. James Bradley presenting “The Galápagos Islands: Then and Now.”
