Joshua Morey, associate lecturer of sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire – Barron County, is the featured speaker for the May 7 Thursdays at the U program at UW-Eau Claire – Barron County.
Joshua Morey
His presentation, “Poverty and Mental Health in Barron County,” will run from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall in Ritzinger Hall. The program, which concludes the spring series, also will be livestreamed at ricelaketv.com.
Morey will discuss emerging research relating to the prevalence of economic insecurity and its impacts on the mental health of young people and their families. Using C. Wright Mills’ sociological imagination as a lodestar, Morey will analyze macro- and micro-level data, Barron County data and the perspectives of students and families he has worked with as a school social worker. Morey also will consider the effectiveness of interventions that have been attempted at structural, institutional and interpersonal levels.
Morey is a certified advanced practice social worker and licensed school social worker. With more than 25 years of experience in human services and education, he has professional expertise in areas such as poverty, homelessness, mental health, domestic violence, sexual violence, race, ethnicity, gender, sex, sexuality and immigration.
The Thursdays at the U weekly series is free and open to the public thanks to support from the UW-Eau Claire – Barron County Foundation. Neither seating reservations nor parking permits are needed for in-person attendees.
While in-person attendance is encouraged, most presentations in the series are livestreamed and archived on the Thursdays at the U webpage.
