Dr. Esther K. Stewart, a geologist with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, is the featured speaker for the Nov. 5 Thursdays at the U program at the University of Wisconsin – Barron County.
Dr. Esther K. Stewart
Her presentation, “The Story of Ancient Lava Flows Beneath Lake Superior,” will run from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall in Ritzinger Hall. It also will be livestreamed at ricelaketv.com.
Nearly a billion years ago, beneath what is now Lake Superior, lava flowed from shield volcanoes and fissures. Stewart’s talk will describe what the environment may have been like as this Midcontinent Rift developed.
Stewart uses geologic mapping to address questions about the rocks that underlie Wisconsin. Prior to joining the state survey, she worked for ExxonMobil in Houston. Stewart, a UW-Madison Badger Talks presenter, holds a bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College, master’s degree from Idaho State University and doctorate from UW-Madison.
The Thursdays at the U weekly series is free and open to the public thanks to support from the UW-Eau Claire – Barron County Foundation. Neither seating reservations nor parking permits are needed for in-person attendees.
While in-person attendance is encouraged, most presentations in the series are livestreamed and archived on the Thursdays at the U webpage.
The next program in the series will be Nov. 12, with Katie Berg presenting “Code Status: End of Life Wishes.”
