He will present “The Founding of Lac Courte Oreilles” from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall in Ritzinger Hall. The presentation also will be livestreamed at ricelaketv.com.

Lake Superior Ojibwe annually and cautiously visited the interior region of the Chippewa and St. Croix River territory in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, but a significant event in 1744 created an Anishinaabe permanency.

Ojibwe settlement led to rapid expansion of resource exploitation, intertribal warfare and European trade. St. Germaine will share elements of historic research and tribal oral accounts of the courageous resolve of a teenage couple who faced death alone and whose names are memorialized nearly 300 years later.

St. Germaine is a former chairman of the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribe who now spends his retirement years writing and teaching about the history of Lac Courte Oreilles.

The Thursdays at the U weekly series is free and open to the public thanks to support from the UW-Eau Claire – Barron County Foundation. Neither seating reservations nor parking permits are needed for in-person attendees.

While in-person attendance is encouraged, most presentations in the series are livestreamed and archived on the Thursdays at the U webpage.

The next program in the series will be Oct. 1, with Steve Sholtz presenting “Mushroom Health Benefits.”
