Dr. Abbey Fischer is the featured speaker for the Feb. 27 Thursdays at the U presentation at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire – Barron County.

Dr. Abbey Fischer
Fischer, campus director at UW-Eau Claire – Barron County, will present “Geeking Out About the Boundary Waters” from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall in Ritzinger Hall. It will take place during the GEEKcon event. The presentation also will be livestreamed at ricelaketv.com.
What is it about the millions of acres of forest and lakes between Minnesota and Canada that cause Fischer to geek out about the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness? Each summer, she paddles, portages and sleeps in a tent on her trips to the wilderness. During her Thursdays at the U lecture, Fischer will help us all appreciate the BWCA, learn how we can enjoy it on our own terms and discuss how we can preserve it for future generations.
Fischer joined the Rice Lake campus in 2016 as a chemistry faculty member after teaching in Morris, Minnesota, and Fond du Lac. She is an outdoors enthusiast and has taken nearly 30 BWCA trips since 2011 — some by herself, others with her wife and more recently with their extended family.
The Thursdays at the U weekly series is free and open to the public thanks to support from the UW-Eau Claire – Barron County Foundation. Neither seating reservations nor parking permits are needed for in-person attendees.
Although in-person attendance is encouraged, most talks in the series are livestreamed. They also are archived and can be watched later on the Thursdays at the U webpage.
The next lecture in the series will be March 6, with Robin Miller presenting “Artificial Intelligence in Everyday Life.”
