Thursdays at the U to highlight history of Rice Lake

Who or what is behind the names we see around Rice Lake? Nicole Muschinske will speak about her study of Rice Lake’s history during the next Thursdays at the U event at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire – Barron County.

The presentation will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. April 10 in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall in Ritzinger Hall. It also will be livestreamed at ricelaketv.com.

Muschinske’s quest to learn the “who’s who” of historical Rice Lake became interwoven with her pursuit of history and environmental knowledge at UW-Madison’s Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, where she is studying the relationships between people and the land throughout time.

Why is Rice Lake named as such when there is no rice? Who were Knapp, Stout and Tainter? Muschinske will lead a fascinating walk down memory lane.

The Thursdays at the U weekly series is free and open to the public thanks to support from the UW-Eau Claire – Barron County Foundation. Neither seating reservations nor parking permits are needed for in-person attendees.

Although in-person attendance is encouraged, most talks in the series are livestreamed. They also are archived and can be watched later on the Thursdays at the U webpage.

The next lecture in the series will be April 17, with Dr. Alex Wiedenhoeft presenting “Casework in Forensic Wood Anatomy.”
